Duffy's smash hit Mercy has been named song of the year in the Mojo Honours List 2008.
The Welsh singer's number one single was called a "timeless song" by the magazine's editor-in-chief Phil Alexander at last night's ceremony at The Brewery in London.
"It could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years," he added.
However, the Rockferry star - real name Aimee Ann Duffy - lost out in the other two categories in which she was nominated, with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds taking the best album prize for Dig Lazarus Dig!!! while Arctic Monkey Alex Turner's side project, the Last Shadow Puppets, were named best breakthrough act.
Alexander paid tribute to the Specials, who entered the Mojo Hall of Fame, as a band who "stood for something in terms of what they had to say", while he described icon award winners the Sex Pistols as "punk's standard bearers".
"The Sex Pistols truly redefined modern music in the space of one solitary album," he explained.
"They influenced every aspect of popular culture from fashion to the media, film and literature and on to the music industry itself."
Other winners in the reader-voted categories included Led Zeppelin for best live act and the Juno soundtrack for best compliation, while Genesis, Mark E Smith and Neil Diamond were all honoured with merit awards.
